In the final weekend of CCWHA play, Michigan State took on Grand Valley for the opportunity to jump Robert Morris and clinch 1st place. With two wins, 3-1 on Saturday and 2-1 on Sunday, MSU did just that and rose to the top of the standings just in time for next weekend's CCWHA championship series. Another team skipping spots in the standings is Ohio State who beat Western Michigan 8-0 and 5-2 to also skip over Grand Valley and slide into 4th place and pushing the Lady Lakers into 5th. MSU and RMU both ended the regular season with 24 points. As CCWHA rules dictate, the first deciding factor is the team that won in the head-to-head matchups between the teams. Since Robert Morris and MSU split their series 2-0 and 0-1, the next factor is total goals against in those games. Since Robert Morris allowed 2 and MSU only allowed 1, MSU moves up to 1st place and RMU falls to 2nd. Check the website for frequent updates in the coming days on tournament information and throughout next weekend as we begin the road to deterimining the 2012 CCWHA Champion!

This past weekend, Michigan and Michigan State met for the first time in regular season play since last February, where after a draw in the first game, Michigan managed to beat the Spartans for the first time in a long 4 year drought. Just a few weeks later, Michigan State went on to win the ACHAnational championship. This past week, MSU was earned the honor of being the #1 team in the country by the ACHA and Michigan held steady in 8th place. Both teams having a lot on the line coming into these two games, it was sure to be an exciting matchup. Late Friday evening in Ann Arbor, MI, both teams started out rather sluggish but Michigan State soon used this to their advantage to get up by 2 by the end of the first and seal their victory with a bouncer in the 2nd winning the game 3-0. On Saturday, the two teams squared off again but the game ahd a much different pace than the first. Both teams came out hard but this time, it was Michigan who got on top early with a goal by Kristin Griebe. Although a very exciting game, no more goals would be scored in regulation and the Wolverines would again beat their cross-state rival Spartans to only further stoke the fire in what has and will continue to be a very heated rivalry. While Michigan is done with CCWHA play for the season, Michigan State will host the GVSU Lakers next weekend and will look to steal 1st place away from the Robert Morris Eagles

As promised, 2012 has started with a bang and brought the first of, what will surely prove to be, many new changes to the CCWHA this year. Robert Morris and Ohio State faced off for the first time in league play and while RMU was victorious on Saturday, Sunday proved to be a whole different game. An overtime goal scored by newcomer Amanda Boskovich proved to be the deciding differeince in the first victory over Robert Morris in Ohio State team history! |
